Robin’s Plantain
Erigeron pulchellus
Robin’s Plantain is one of the earliest native wildflowers to brighten woodlands and meadows in spring. Low rosettes of soft hairy leaves hug the ground while delicate pale lavender to pink daisy-like flowers rise on slender stems in April and May. The blooms bring an airy softness to forest edges and open clearings.
This plant thrives in open woods, prairies, and sunny woodland edges where soils are well drained. It slowly spreads by rhizomes, forming natural patches that help stabilize soil and support early season biodiversity.
Ecologically it is an important nectar source for early pollinators emerging from winter dormancy. Native bees, small butterflies, and other beneficial insects rely on its early flowers when few other plants are blooming.
Indigenous communities historically used the plant medicinally. Preparations from the leaves and roots were used for colds, sore throats, and respiratory ailments.
Robin’s Plantain is an excellent choice for naturalized woodland gardens, pollinator meadows, and restoration plantings. It brings gentle beauty while supporting the delicate early season web of life.
