Mashkiki-jiibik – The Umbrella Medicine

Mashkiki-jiibik is a bold woodland perennial recognized by its broad, umbrella-like leaves that form lush colonies across the forest floor. In Anishinaabe understanding, powerful forest medicines grow with intention — strong in chemistry, protective in nature, and part of a balanced woodland system.

A Native Groundcover of Rich Forests

Mayapple spreads steadily by rhizomes, forming dense carpets beneath deciduous trees. In mid-spring, a solitary white flower blooms beneath the leaf canopy, later developing into a pale yellow berry. By mid to late summer, the foliage dies back as the plant retreats underground, conserving energy for the following season.

Though striking in form, all parts of the plant are toxic if improperly used. Historically, its potent compounds have been utilized in carefully prepared medicinal and insecticidal applications.

Planting Mashkiki-jiibik restores woodland groundlayers and strengthens shaded ecosystems with bold structural foliage.
