Meet the underdog of the eastern forests — the Hop Hornbeam, also known as Ironwood, and for good reason. This slow-growing, deeply resilient tree has wood so tough it was once used to make tool handles and sleigh runners. But don’t let its quiet strength fool you — it’s also an ecological workhorse.

Native to well-drained woodlands across Southern Ontario, Ostrya virginiana thrives in dry shade and plays well with oak, maple, and hickory. It provides important habitat for birds and small mammals, while its nutlets feed wildlife well into winter.
