Common Juniper
Juniperus communis
A hardy native evergreen shrub with sharp needle-like foliage and a spreading to upright growth habit. Small yellow pollen cones appear in spring, while the female plants produce blue to dark purple berry-like cones that mature over two seasons.
These aromatic “juniper berries” are an important food source for birds and wildlife and have long been valued for their culinary and medicinal uses.
A Tough Evergreen of Open Landscapes
Common Juniper is one of the most adaptable conifers in northern ecosystems. It grows as a low spreading shrub or upright narrow form depending on site conditions. Its dense evergreen branches provide year-round shelter for birds and small animals.
Because of its toughness and ability to grow in poor soils, it is an important species in exposed landscapes.
A Plant of Rocky Slopes and Dry Forests
Common Juniper occurs naturally in rocky outcrops, sandy barrens, open forests, dunes, and dry meadows. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils and is highly tolerant of drought, wind, and cold northern climates.
Its deep roots help stabilize thin soils while its evergreen cover provides year-round habitat in open ecosystems.

Helps stabilize sandy and rocky soils
Associated Dry Meadow & Rocky Habitat Species
Common companions in natural plant communities include:
• Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium)
• Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)
• Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum)
• Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve)
• Hairy Beardtongue (Penstemon hirsutus)
• Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea)
• Wild Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana)
Planting these species together helps recreate resilient dry meadow and rocky habitat ecosystems that support pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects.
