Baltic Rush
Juncus balticus
A slender native rush with upright, smooth green stems that form tidy clumps in wet soils. The stems rise vertically from the base, creating a clean architectural look, while small clusters of brownish flowers appear along the side of the stems in early to mid-summer.
Its simple vertical form adds strong texture and structure to wetlands, rain gardens, and shoreline plantings.
A Tough Wetland Stabilizer
Baltic Rush is well known for its resilience in wet and challenging environments. Its dense rhizome network spreads slowly through the soil, helping stabilize shorelines and saturated soils.
Because of its durability and tolerance of flooding, it is commonly used in wetland restoration and shoreline stabilization projects.
A Plant of Wetlands and Shorelines
This species naturally grows in marshes, wet meadows, lake shores, riverbanks, and seasonally flooded soils. It tolerates fluctuating water levels and can grow in both saturated and periodically dry soils.
Its upright clumps create habitat for insects and small wildlife while contributing to the structure of wetland plant communities.
