Eastern Prickly Pear
Opuntia humifusa

A unique and hardy native cactus with low-growing, pad-like stems and vibrant yellow flowers that bloom in early to mid-summer. The showy blooms are followed by small reddish fruits, adding seasonal interest. Despite its desert-like appearance, this species is native to parts of Ontario and thrives in dry, sandy, and rocky habitats.

Eastern Prickly Pear forms spreading colonies and is well adapted to extreme conditions including heat, drought, and poor soils. Its fleshy pads store water, allowing it to survive in environments where few other plants can thrive.

Growing Conditions

  • Height: 4–12 in
  • Spread: Spreading by pads, forming colonies
  • Light: Full sun
  • Soil: Dry, well-drained soils; thrives in sandy, rocky, or gravelly conditions
