Hydrophyllum canadense

Naatigwaashk – The Bold Woodland Groundcover

A taller and more robust relative of Hydrophyllum virginianum, Canada Waterleaf is recognized for its broad, maple-like leaves and strong colony-forming habit. It creates lush, textured carpets across rich forest floors, bringing depth and density to shaded landscapes.

A Native of Rich Deciduous Woodlands

Canada Waterleaf thrives in moist, humus-rich forests and shaded floodplains. In late spring, clusters of small whitish flowers tinged with purple and soft pink rise above the foliage. While the blooms are delicate, this species is primarily valued for its ability to form dense groundcover in healthy woodland ecosystems.

It spreads by rhizomes, gradually weaving the forest floor together and protecting soil from erosion.
