Sand Dropseed

Sporobolus cryptandrus

A fine-textured native warm-season prairie grass that forms elegant clumps of narrow arching leaves. In mid to late summer, airy clouds of delicate flower panicles rise above the foliage, giving the plant a soft, hazy appearance in the landscape.

The tiny seeds that follow are an important food source for birds and other wildlife, while the graceful form of the plant adds movement and texture to dry prairie plantings.

A Grass of Wind and Sand

Sand Dropseed is highly adapted to dry, sandy environments. Its deep and extensive root system allows it to thrive in drought conditions and helps stabilize loose soils in exposed landscapes.

The plant’s open, cloud-like seed heads catch the light beautifully and move gently in the wind, making it a subtle but striking feature in naturalistic plantings.

A Prairie and Sand Barren Specialist

This species naturally occurs in sandy prairies, dunes, dry open woodlands, and disturbed sandy soils. It thrives in full sun and very well-drained soils and is extremely tolerant of heat, drought, and poor soil conditions.

Because of its adaptability, it is often used in restoration projects to help rebuild prairie and dune ecosystems.
