New York Ironweed

Vernonia noveboracensis

Very similar to Tall Ironweed, but somewhat shorter, less stemmy and more compact. The flower heads on this plant are long, and each contain 30-50 flowers. Not a native to Ontario, but along the northeast coastal areas of the United States and further inland.  Attractive for its late season purple flowers and a favourite of butterflies.
