Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata), is a distinctive deciduous tree renowned for its rugged, peeling bark and impressive stature. This native tree can reach heights of 70 to 100 feet, making it a prominent feature in forests and landscapes. Its compound leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow in the fall, providing seasonal interest. In the spring, Shagbark Hickory produces small, inconspicuous flowers that give way to hard-shelled nuts which are a valuable food source for wildlife such as squirrels, turkeys, and bears. The wood of Shagbark Hickory is prized for its strength and is often used in tool handles and furniture. This tree thrives in well-drained soils and adds architectural beauty to large gardens and natural areas.
